Questions

Periodontal disease, commonly known as parodontosis is a disease of periodontal tissues. In addition to tooth decay, it is the most common disease in oral pathology. Around 90% of the population suffers from one of the forms of the disease, regardless of age. The most common reason for the incidence of periodontal disease is the bad oral hygiene. Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria that are inhabitants of the normal oral flora, and the disease manifests itself once the immune system is weakened and / or virulence of microorganisms increases. The disease passes through several fazes and its ultimate consequence   is a tooth loss. The most important and conspicuous first phase is an inflammation of the gums (gingivitis), which is characterized by swelling and bleeding gums while brushing teeth. If gingivitis is left untreated, the inflammation expands and collapses the supporting apparatus of teeth.  So-called: periodontal pockets are formed (the space between swollen gums and tooth root), which are the most important sign of periodontal disease. Teeth become sensitive to mechanical, thermal and other stimuli.  If the patient at the time, does not start a proper dental treatment, the teeth begin to sway, and in the final stages , ends up falling out. The greatest danger is that periodontal disease does not hurt until complications occur. The disease begins inconspicuously by bleeding gums, and can start in young age.
Reasons for occurrence of the periodontal disease are:

  • Poor and irregular ORAL HYGIENE
  • SMOKING AND ALCOHOL
  • Genetic predisposition
  • General disorders (diabetes, etc.)
Periodontal disease is present:

  • Redness, swelling and bleeding of the gums
  • Receding gums
  • Tooth mobility
  • Unpleasant breath
  • Unpleasant taste in the mouth

Many people do not know that these symptoms may also mean a big problem. Normal gums are light pink and do not bleed when brushing !!!
Periodontal disease is a chronic disease that cannot be cured but it can be stopped. Treatment of periodontal disease is surgical or conservative, depending on the stage, and it aims to prevent the further progress of deterioration of periodontal tissues, and thus improve the health of your teeth and mouth.  Proper daily brushing and flossing (morning and evening) can prevent the occurrence of the periodontal disease. Regular visits to the dentist for professional teeth cleaning and scaling are the enhances the prevention of this disease as well as the diagnosis and treatment at its early stage. Regular maintenance, avoidance of bad habits (smoking, alcohol), as well as regular visits to the dentist (3-6 months), are a sure path to success and durability of your teeth!
